On Monday, January 12th, Artistic Director Terry Burgler, Associate Producer Tess Burgler, and company member Ron Cuirle all sat as guest judges for the high school students' Shakespeare monologue competition at Western Reserve Academy. One WRA finalist and alternate were selected to move on to the state level.
The contest is a national event, run through the English Speaking Union, and it inspires critical thinking, empathetic awareness, and self-confidence through the study and delivery of Shakespeare's language.
We had the pleasure of watching 10 beautifully prepared, dedicated students deliver soliloquies from Hamlet, Titus, Troilus & Cressida, Midsummer, R&J, and more. They performed 20 lines in front of a panel of judges and the entire high school community. Their selections were exciting, and the event carried with it a supportive and engaging atmosphere.
Thank you, WRA, for inviting us to be a part of your admirable community! And thank you, English Speaking Union, for organizing such a meaningful expression of humanity in young people through your National Shakespeare Competition.
